CAUSE
This behavior can occur if a VIA Busmaster controller and video adapter based on the nVidia chip set is installed in your computer.

RESOLUTION

SYMPTOMS
When you try to start Microsoft Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings or Microsoft Age of Empires II Expansion: The Conquerors, you may receive the following error message:
Could not initialize graphics system. Make sure that your video card and driver are compatible with DirectDraw.

CAUSE
This issue may occur if any one of the following conditions is true:• The game cannot start because of a limation or a restriction of your display hardware.
• Your display hardware does not meet the minimum requirements of the game.

SYMPTOMS
When you try to start Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings or Microsoft Age of Empires II Expansion: The Conquerors, you may receive the following error message:

A required .dll file, Dplayx.dll, was not found.

CAUSE
This issue may occur if Microsoft DirectPlay 6.1a or later is not installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION
Update Microsoft DirectX
To resolve this issue, download and install the latest version of DirectX. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
